Summer Nostalgia/ Hudson Valley Photographer

Wherever you are winter can seem never ending. Right now it is bitterly cold in Rhinebeck, I mean bitter, which has cause this Hudson Valley Photographer to experience never ending summer nostalgia. This is when I scroll back through all my photos of summers past. The splashing, the bubble machines, the vacations, the lounging on neighbors' lawns until 9 PM. Right now we are in the season of "Oh no, it's dark at 4 PM, what am I going to do with these kids?!" Ugh, if you know, you know.

Thought I'd share some of my favorites from the summer because of course my favorite photos are the ones of my kids, a pretty common phenomenon. Mostly these are from trips we took last year. If your looking for travel ideas, these are taken in Greenville, ME (https://greenvilleme.gov/), a seven hour drive, Ashfield, MA (https://www.ashfield.org/), a two hour drive and the Ashoken Promenade (https://www.scenichudson.org/explore-the-valley/outdoor-adventures/adventure/ashokan-reservoir-promenade/), a 30 minute drive from Rhinebeck.

When thinking about photography and why it is so important to me, I think a lot about the passage of time. How fast it goes, even when it feels slow and how our brains replace memories to make room for new ones like when you find a photo from a day you had forgotten about and it all comes rushing back.

When I lost my brother time became really palpable. I felt it so strongly. That there wasn't any more of it, that the time we had together was finite. All of a sudden we had stopped making memories with him and we were left with what we were left with. It wasn't long before I had found every photo and every video of him that there was, and I had to live with what I could remember. And what I could remember was being filled with my kids and new adventures. I was afraid at some point I would lose them all.

It may seem a bit overdone, but that's why this Hudson Valley Photographer has summer nostalgia today and finds photography so darn important. It's changed over the years, but loss and motherhood have shaped most of it. Take the family photos, take your phone photos and make sure you're in them, especially the mamas because it's an important part of your past and your future.
